Lil Jon (born Jonathan Smith) was born on the 17th of January, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia. He was raised in his hometown as he completed his graduation from Douglas High School in Atlanta.
Jon began his career working as a DJ for Atlanta night clubs.

Jonathan Smith adopted the stage name Lil Jon by following the trend and formed his musical group “Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz”. The group had rappers Big Sam (real name Sammie Dernard Norris) and Lil’ Bo (real name Wendell Maurice Neal). They released labels under Atlanta based Mirror Image Records and its releases were distributed by Ichiban Records. The group disbanded in 2004.
Jon launched his own music label. BME Recordings in 2000. He also signed distribution agreement for the label with Norcross, a Georgia-based Southern Music Distribution. His major breakthrough came with the album titled “We Still Crunk!”. The album’s track “I Like Those Girls” was a major hit among the masses.
Lil Jon faced many issues with TVT Records which he joined in 2001 with his group. Due to the problems he faced, he vowed never to record for TVT again. He stated that its owner Steve Gottlieb was short-changing him.
